History behind my tale

Recent researches by the Historical Maritime Society tell us that more women served about His Majesty's ships in 1800 than was previously thought. Their presence on board was not officially acknowledged. To be rated and paid, you had to have a male name. Thus a woman called 'William Brown' served for 11 years as Captain of the Maintop aboard the Queen Charlotte, while another woman 'Tom Bowling' was a Boatswain's Mate for twenty years. A baby was delivered in the bread room of the Tremendous during the battle of the Glorious First of June, another child was born during the Battle of the Nile, and when the Lapwing ran aground in 1801, forty of fifty women exerted themselves at the ropes. Admiral Lord St. Vincent even complained about the amount of fresh water the women used while at sea for washing.

In my trilogy ‘Midshipman Harriman’ ‘Lieutenant Harriman’ and 'Captain Harriman' I bring some of these unsung female heroes to the fore. The girl Corrie and her brother James, both in their teens and well brought up in St. John’s, are impressed aboard the frigate Swift, where they quickly adapt to the uncomfortable life of sailors in the Royal Navy during the Napoleonic wars.

Today I finished writing the third book 'Captain Harriman' and I sent the MS to my publisher. I'll let you know when the new book becomes available for purchase. Most of my books can be dewnloaded for less than $3 from Amazon. Enjoy!
